Originally posted May 14 2008 - I decided to compile a mix of Sam & Sammy’s in the world of music. And why not? Some fine tracks by little known artists sit comfortably here with the greats such as Cooke and Davis Jr. The Sam Carty track, for instance, probably my favourite song in the world right now..

After recently posting quite a few ‘themed’ and ‘specific genre’ mixes, it’s nice to free myself of the shackles and limitations of such things and actually throw anything and everything into the cauldron. As long as it’s bloody good. So this one’s a jumbled up mix of all sorts, with lots of twists, turns and genre hops.

The irony of the mix title is not lost on me, as this one contains more modern music ( ie post 1972 ) than many of my previous mixes.

Download if only for the lovely Adem closer, his version of Pinback’s Loro is just about the best thing in ages.

I didn’t need to do this. It’s not going to win me any more applause. Quite the opposite, probably? Although I hope not. You see, we’ve all got our ‘Guilty Pleasures’, and these are mine. I plead my innocence though, as I proudly parade this, because I love each and every track here dearly. Why? I do not know, but I do.

A few other Guilty Pleasures then – Banana Sandwiches, Musicals, Romcoms, Jessica Rabbit.. Last Tracks cut – KC & The Sunshine Band – Give It Up, Wham – Freedom, Cher – The Shoop Shoop Song, Demis Roussos – Forever & Ever, Ultravox – Loves Great Adventure……

Glad that’s all off my back. But there’s still time to change my mind. Ah, sod it – SUBMIT…..

No, not a mix about mosquitos. Morrissey! And The Smiths of course, the finest band ever to hail from my gloomy hometown city..

Every track here is in some way connected to Morrissey. Firstly, his love of sixties girl groups and singers is well documented. During their first gig, at The Ritz, Manchester in October 1982 they finished their set with a cover of The Cookies ‘I Want A Boy For My Birthday’. They covered the Cilla track ‘Work Is A Four Letter Word’ late on in their brief career. The Smiths also covered Twinkle’s ‘Golden Lights’, widely regarded as their weakest track – find the original here

Included are some of Morrissey’s favourite acts – Sparks, Raymonde and Ludus to name but 3. As a solo artist he covered 8,10,24 and 28 amongst others. Don't plagiarise or take "on loan"> Well, actually, that has been a common occurance in the Career of Moz. His track ‘Certain People I Know’ bears more than a passing resemblance to the T’Rex opener. The Smiths ‘A Rush And A Push’ a mirror image of ‘Shoes’ by Reparata ( thanks Moe for that one).

Lyrically ‘Last Night I Dreamt’ is influenced by the Billy Fury track featured here ( Morrissey based his early image on the ‘50s icon ). ‘There is A Light’ owes a debt, lyrically, to the New York Dolls ‘Lonely Planet Boy’. The Dolls connections don’t stop there of course – their track Trash a live Morrissey favourite. He was also the President of the NYD Fanclub many moons ago….

The Bacarach penned ‘The Answer To Everything’ featured here handed Johnny Marr the melancholic tone on ‘Please Please Please’. Then there’s Victoria Wood – Northern Comedienne who makes her AotM debut here – ‘Fourteen Again’ a huge influence, lyrically, on ‘Rusholme Ruffians’, musically, the Elvis track 'His Latest Flame' most definitely the blueprint…

Add to all this, Momus, whose character ‘Maf’ plans to kill Morrissey, but is thwarted by Didsbury Police, the ‘How Soon Is Now’ sampling Soho track, some nice Smiths covers (25-27), and Gene. Upon releasing their debut single in 1994, they were heralded as the NEW Smiths. They weren’t. But the track featured here was one of their best..

So, there you go, a mix that should delight Morrissey, fans of, and hopefully one that stands alone as a fine mix for non believers. Why don’t you find out for yourselves

A few points worth noting - The Zillions track, fine as it is, sounds VERY similar to a VERY famous piece of music, if you download, it'll become apparent.

I've always been an admirer of RetroJoe's obsession with chart positions, on both sides of the pond, and his dedication to the cause. A few weeks ago I approached him with the idea of doing an alternating DJ mix with a slight difference - he would pick a Number One single from the billboard chart, I'd return with a track from the UK singles chart that peaked at No2, and so on and so forth...

Joe came back with the idea of sticking to the time period 1973-1975. Knowing there is good music everywhere if you look hard enough, I duly agreed. The next restriction placed upon the mix was that each track must have faired at least 20 places worse in the opposing country. This made things trickier; indeed one of my choices because of this rule, was a track I'd never heard before (tk14). Having said all this, the mix turned out better than I'd expected, here is the result. Thanks to Joe for the Journey, he'll be posting the 'mirror mix' at pretty much the same time I hope... Enjoy!

My second favourite Prince song ( after the title track of the album it’s lifted from ), and a Japanese act named Les 5-4-3-2-1, with a track that is suspiciously similar to Stereolab’s classic ‘Ping Pong’..
