The film Ghostbusters is released into theaters, becoming a summer blockbuster hit, with the song "Ghostbusters" by Ray Parker Jr. becoming a Top 40 hit.

Thirty-six of Britain and Ireland's top pop musicians gather in a Notting Hill studio to form Band Aid, and record the song "Do They Know It's Christmas", in order to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia.

On a Challenger mission, two astronauts become the first humans to fly free of a spacecraft.

And perhaps more significantly Barrydali's 5 year old brother threw his brand new remote control tank out of the window on Christmas day in a jealous rage because his own presents didn't match up. Unbelievably Band Aid have yet to write a song about that. If you're watching Stephen Maguire this ones for you...
