Just for fun - 21 versions of Tomorrow Never Knows. Thanks to ladakale for a couple of these versions. The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame : Outside Looking In

On the 10th March of this year, Madonna, The Ventures, John Mellencamp, The Dave Clark Five and Leonard Cohen became the latest artists to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Few can argue with Madonna’s inclusion, having had more impact across the pop culture landscape than all but a handful of names, male or female, in rock history. Or the Ventures inclusion, 23 years eligible and finally getting in after their first nomination. Dave Clark Five – solid if unspectacular and Mellencamp – steady and often under appreciated also went in. It was Cohen’s inclusion funnily enough that caused the most fuss. Always more of a hit with the critics than the record buying public, Leonard is the first inductee in the Hall of Fame’s 23 year history never to have scored a Billboard chart album or Top 100 single.

The 54 tracks on this mix represent artists who are all eligible ( having made their first recording 25 or more years ago ) who I believe should also have been included into the Hall Of Fame by now.

Carnaby Chic

For this mix, I tried to go for something a bit kitsch. A bit kooky and very groovy. You know, the kind of mix that girls who secretly ( or indeed openly ) wish they were Audrey Hepburn would love..
My kind of girls really. And what has resulted is very much my kind of mix…

Big Star : Covered

And while I'm having a little dalliance with covers, here's a mix of Big Star cover versions. Two artists are featured twice on this mix, I wanted to host as many different songs. You know, rather than just give you twenty versions of 'Thirteen' or 'El Goodo'.

Some fairly decent takes on here, none of them come close to emulating the originals. However it would take an extraordinarily poor band to tarnish these wonderful songs. You may disagree...

  1. Gentle Readers - Back of a Car
  2. The Posies - Feel
  3. Giftshop & Susan And Brandee - Give Me Another Chance
  4. Matthew Sweet - The Ballad of el Goodo
  5. This Mortal Coil - You & Your Sister
  6. Bangles - September Gurls
  7. Wilco - Thirteen
  8. Skywriter - I'm in Love With a Girl
  9. Idle Wilds - You Get What You Deserve
  10. Yo La Tengo - Take Care
  11. Baby Steps - When My Baby's Beside Me
  12. Champale - Stroke It Noel
  13. Cheap Trick - That 70's Song (In the Street)
  14. Matt Devine - My Life Is Right
  15. Fooled By April - Oh Dana
  16. Grand Champeen - Daisy Glaze
  17. Juliana Hatfield - Don't Lie to Me
  18. Teenage Fanclub - Jesus Christ
  19. The Posies - What's Going Ahn
  20. The Afghan Whigs - Nightime
  21. This Mortal Coil - Kangaroo
  22. Son Volt - Holocaust

Many thanks to Dead Man for a large chunk of these hard to find tracks.

Chart Round Up

Kid Rock scores his first UK No1 single this week with ‘All Summer Long’. The Warren Zevon sampling track has also peaked at #1 in Austria, Switzerland, Germany & Ireland. It stalled at #38 on the Billboard 100.

A huge climb of 134 places sees Katy Perry climb to #4 this week with ‘I Kissed A Girl’. Currently at the top of the Billboard chart, don’t be surprised if Ms Perry emulates that feat in the UK as early as next week.

I’ve no idea why but ‘In The Air Tonight’ is the No1 single in New Zealand. Madonna & Justin continue to Top the charts in 14 Countries with ‘4 Minutes’, and is currently the Worlds biggest seller.

A huge congratulations to Snow Patrol who this week celebrate 100 Weeks in the UK chart with ‘Chasing Cars’. No mean feat this. It’s currently No2 on the All time list of Chart Runners, still a fair way behind Sinatra’s ‘My Way’ on 122 Weeks. But if you ask my opinion that record is there to be broken, and will be.

Finally, ‘Abba Gold’ is back at No1 in the UK album Chart, 16 years after its release. And Noah And The Whale have a Top 10 Single with their debut ‘5 Years Time’. Hooray!

Great Britain Vs The USA

Here's a hypothetical situation for you all. You're about to be dumped on a desert island for, say, 3 years. Don't worry, there'll be plenty of Food & Drink, Cigarettes and hunky men / scantily clad women for you. But here's the bad news, you can only take your entire record/CD collection from one of these 2 countries. Tough isn't it? So what's it going to be. 3 years without the Beatles. No Dylan or Velvets for 36 months. Choice is yours...
Obviously other countries make great music, so don't pull me up on that, unless you really have to.. And before I go, my stance? Well, obviously I love the Beatles. But there's a lack of any decent Soul or Jazz from over here. AND I believe I could listen to Big Star all day every day. And then there's Motown.. And Nuggets vol1 is better than vol 2. So, even though I'm a Brit, there'll be no flag waving here. It's one-nil to the States...
